Designed by Allison Chrien for Yellowbird Yarn Room
This hat is knit flat then lightly felted (just enough to strengthen the button band without losing fabric flexibility or stitch definition). The vine pattern on the hat pictured was embroidered with an unplied strand of Tundra from Loop-d-Loop by Teva Durham before felting.
Note: when knitting the second button hole row, be careful to work both yarn overs.
Yarn: Granite from Loop-d-Loop by Teva Durham, 2 balls (55 yds/ea) or any rather bulky yarn that may be felted
Needles and notions: size 11 straight, or size needed to obtain gauge; 3 buttons; foam ball wrapped in plastic wrap for blocking
Gauge: approx. 12 stitches/4 in in stockinette (after light felting)
Cast on 65 stitches using the long-tail cast on.

Finishing
Sew in ends. Hand wash aggressively in warm water in order to lightly felt the fabric then block out to dry. (I pin the hat onto a foam ball covered in plastic wrap.) Sew on buttons. (Use the foam ball inside the hat to help with proper placement of the buttons.)
