Some weeks ago I was thrilled to get a phone call from a very nice lady at TNNA who had just one question: would I like an intern?
Now, for me, this question fell into the "Things I'd be crazy to say 'no' to" catagory.
Jennifer started with me just over two weeks ago, and I decided it was about time to introduce her to everyone...after all, she is going to be filling in for me while I'm on vacation! I won't have access to a computer every day while I'm gone, so she will be filling me in on the happenings at River City and passing along any questions.
And so today marks the beginning of "Intern Tuesday", where Jennifer will be posting a little something each week until she leaves me. She's a sweet girl, so let's show her a little love...
Hi everyone, first off I would like to introduce myself. My name is Jennifer and I am a senior at the University of Akron. I am majoring in Fashion Merchandising and minoring in Marketing and Sales Technology. I will be graduating after this fall semester ends in December. I took a class before I started my internship called seminar in fiber arts. This is part of a program with PIPN where we learn the different needle arts. It was a 3 week course for 5 days each week at the university. We were exposed to techniques such as knitting, crocheting, embroidery, cross-stitching, and needle point.
With my class we were able to visit the TNNA trade show as guests in Columbus for the weekend. This let us have a whole new experience and see what it's like with the different booths, techniques, and talk to the retailers and buyers. It was very neat and interesting and made you think and see what different things we can do in the future and about careers in these fields. My favorite part was going around to the different booths and talking to the people who were representing them. I would have to say my favorite one was called Krenik. The man spoke with my friend and me for almost an hour going over every single thing and detail in the booth and about it. He handed us many brochures about different products and techniques. We were able to ask questions and feel or look at all items. They had holographic threads in various metallic colors of the rainbow that were just gorgeous and extremely sparkly!! The one thing I found fascinating was they do some designing for Marc Jacobs and we got to see some products, threads, and embellishments used!! I also really enjoyed seeing needle point bracelets in various patterns and colors and want to make my own sometime soon. I had a great time at the trade show and it gave me so much inspiration and creativity to keep going with these needle arts. Now I can apply my skills and learn more with what I have learned and am now with my internship.
Right now I am interning with Allison at Yellowbird Yarn Room. I am just starting to learn knitting myself and working on that to start out with and love it a lot! Every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am-12pm we hold an “Open Knit session”. Anyone is welcome to come in and either knit or bring some other project to work on! We meet at Judy’s Ice Cream Shoppe which is at River City Gift Shops. Hope to see you all thereJ.
