Kids. They bring you so many wonderful things that you just don't expect. Handmade bookmarks. Dandelions from the yard. Rocks in the shape of a heart. Strep throat.
I hadn't picked up my sock for a week. Had that darn cold/flu thing going and just wanted to knit a nice mindless scarf instead. Then, Thursday morning came and I had no choice. After all, what's a sock knit-along without sock knitting, right?
Bad idea.
I spent some time thumbing through some wonderful knitting books that Barbara brought in. One in particular had page after page of stitch patterns. I found one called "Pointed Leaf" that I really liked and decided to use that for the leg of my sock. So, I dove right in.
Forgot to calculate how many stitches I needed to complete the pattern. Ok. Tink a bit, no big deal. I'll just calculate and start this row over.
Now, the pattern says "Multiple of 12 sts plus 2". I have 24 on each side of my sock, so I just need to add two more stitches, right? So, one row to add those 2 and then start the first pattern row.
Oops.
Get to the end of the first pattern row only to realize that those "plus 2" stitches were just to reflect the first two stitches of the row. Which I don't need. Because I'm working in the round.
Ok. Wabi-sabi. Leave the row and move on. Decrease those two stitches and start on row 2.
Now, this pattern doesn't make sense with the picture. A lot of purls. Doesn't look like a lot of purls in the picture. Maybe it will make more sense as I get more done. Move on to row 3.
Hey, wait a minute...I know why there a so many purls! Because this pattern is written to go back and forth. Not in the round. The knits should be purls, the purls should be knits, and it should all be done backwards!
Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!
Doctor's appointment later that afternoon revealed a fever of 100.6 and strep throat.
Shoulda stuck with the mindless scarf.
